Muriel Stephenson [s.4.1.1.5]

Muriel Stepehenson was the fifth child of William George Stephenson & Margaret Jean Gaudie born November 1st, 1881 at York.

Muriel was still living at home in 1891 at Holgate Crescent, York & there was an older sister & older brother at home.   Also grandmother Margaret Gaudie (81) was living with them.

In 1901 Muriel was still at home with her widowed father & older sister Bertha.  They were living at 24 St Pauls Square, York.

Muriel married Conrad Gribble in Oct-December 1908 at Darlington.  Conrad was born July 27th, 1881 at Wellington, Somerset, the son of Mary A Soltau & Theodore G Gribble, a civil engineer.

In 1911 Muriel & Conrad were living at ‘Chez Nous’, Malton Rd, York & Conrad was a civil engineer like his father.  They had a 1 year old daughter Muriel Daphne & a cook & a nurse.

Daughter Muriel Daphne married George J Charlton in 1929 at Chertsey, Surrey.

Daughter Pamela married Peter J Dixon in 1939 in Surrey. The 1939 register shows Muriel living with daughter Pamela & husband Peter, a motor tutor, at The Fylde, W Clandon, Guildford, Surrey.  (Interestingly Muriel gave her birth year as 1891!)

Muriel appears to have been very active in the social activities of West Clandon Parish, Surrey organizing many dances in aid of charitable organisations.

Whilst shopping in Harrods, Brompton Rd, Muriel’s handbag containing £10 in notes was stolen.  The thief was apprehended in possession of the handbag but no money was recovered.  (Chelsea News & General Advertiser, January 22nd, 1943)

Conrad travelled a great deal in his occupation & received an OBE for his work in engineering. In 1950 & 1951 Conrad, working for the civil service, & Muriel  returned from Colombo, Ceylon & gave their address in the UK as Dover Cottage, West Clandon, Guildford, Surrey.

Muriel died in Oct-December 1957, aged 75, in Surrey.

In 1960 Conrad was recorded as returning from South Africa to Southampton & his address was St Clair, Heathside Park Rd, Woking, Surrey. In July-September Conrad married again in North West Surrey, his second wife being Sonia West.

Conrad died, aged 79, on June 8th, 1961 at Uplands Cottage, Netherfield, Battle, Sussex.  Administration of his will was granted to Sonia Gribble, widow, & Peter John Dixon, civil servant, & his effects were £598.3s.
